Officially, Dutch drivers over the age of 75 can no longer hold a category C or CE license, which allows them to drive trucks or vehicles with trailers. This decision, made in accordance with the Dutch Road Traffic Act, is based on public safety considerations.
Strict penalties are imposed for violations of the rules:
Fine of 1200 euros
Maximum 8 months exemption from driving license requirement
Older drivers can still drive a car or motorcycle (with a category A or B license), but they must undergo regular medical examinations from the age of 60; for professional drivers, this applies from the age of 50.
Why this measure? The numbers are worrying.
