We came home from vacation and found this strange thing in the bathroom

Why Termites Are Attracted To Homes

From a termite's perspective, many houses provide ideal living conditions. Termites seek food, moisture, shelter, and protection. Residential properties often supply all four.

Wooden framing, flooring, furniture, cardboard, books, and many construction materials contain cellulose, which serves as a primary food source for termites.

Moisture makes the environment even more attractive. Leaking pipes, roof damage, poor ventilation, damp crawl spaces, and excessive humidity create ideal conditions for a colony to thrive.

Because termites avoid light and open air, they typically remain hidden inside:

  • Walls
  • Foundations
  • Crawl spaces
  • Attics
  • Subfloors
  • Spaces behind bathroom walls

Common Warning Signs

A visible nest is rarely the first sign of an infestation.

Discarded Wings: Swarming termites shed their wings after finding a suitable place to establish a colony.

Mud Tubes: Many termite species build protective tunnels made of soil and saliva.

Hollow Wood: Termites consume wood from the inside out, leaving a thin outer surface that may sound hollow when tapped.
