When I discovered a strange, red, slimy shape in my garden, I initially thought it was some kind of creepy animal. But what I found was actually much more surprising… and completely natural.
One morning, like any other, while going out to water my flowers, I made a rather surprising discovery in my garden. In the middle of the flowerbed, a strange, red, slimy, and foul-smelling shape seemed to be emerging from the ground. At first, I thought it was an animal, or even something dangerous. But the truth was both more reassuring… and just as fascinating.
A disturbing discovery in the garden

That’s exactly what happened to me. My first reaction was fear and confusion. I thought I’d discovered a giant larva or some strange animal. Intrigued and a little worried, I decided to do some research to understand what it was.
And the answer surprised me.
It wasn’t an animal, but a very unusual fungus.

The mysterious « creature » was actually a fungus called Anthurus archeri, more commonly known as devil’s fingers. The name alone is intimidating, and its appearance only adds to the effect.
This fungus originates from Australia and Tasmania, but it has gradually spread to several regions of the world. Today, it can be found in Europe, particularly in damp and wooded areas.
What makes it so impressive is its shape: it resembles red fingers or small tentacles emerging from the ground, often covered in a viscous substance.
Why does this mushroom smell so bad?
