Ethan’s voice was steady but carried through the entire garden like thunder.
“Mom, you’ve just humiliated the woman I love in front of our family and friends. But the real lie here isn’t hers — it’s yours.”
Diane’s triumphant smile faltered. “What are you talking about? I’m protecting you! She’s been hiding her cancer, pretending to be healthy—”
Ethan cut her off, his tone ice-cold. “Sarah never hid anything from me. I knew about her diagnosis from the very beginning. I was there for every appointment. I held her hand through every round of chemo. The only person who’s been lying is you.”
He turned to the guests, many of whom were still in shock, phones now recording discreetly.
“Six months ago, my mother told me Sarah’s cancer was terminal. She said doctors gave her only months to live and that marrying her would destroy my future. She begged me to leave her. She even offered to introduce me to her friend’s daughter — a ‘healthy’ girl.”
A murmur rippled through the crowd. Diane’s face turned pale.
Ethan continued, never letting go of my hand. “But I checked with Sarah’s doctors myself. Her cancer wasn’t terminal. She was responding well to treatment. Mom had lied to me, hoping I’d abandon the woman I love during her weakest moment.”
I stood there, still holding my breath, as the truth unfolded. Ethan had never told me about his mother’s interference. He had quietly confronted the lies and chosen me anyway.
Diane started sputtering. “That’s not true! I was just concerned—”
“Concerned?” Ethan’s voice rose. “You’ve been spreading rumors to our family for months, saying Sarah was faking her illness for sympathy. You told Aunt Linda that Sarah was using me for money. And today, you chose to rip her wig off — to shame her on the most important day of our lives — because you couldn’t stand losing control.”
One of Ethan’s cousins stood up. “Diane, is this true? You told me the same thing last month.”
